Evening all, I hope you all had a pleasant weekend ,albeit a bit winterish. "Slightly challenging for us rural folk". We had a family weekend celebrating my mother in law 8oth birthday. Peter Vossen and myself visited Jackie Stanley, she was fine and off to the beach for a few days. Thanked Rotary for our support to her and her family. David will introduce a rural theme in his meetings open address. As a dairy farmer, he receives weekly updates of information called 'Farm Watch' Twenty farmers throughout the Waikato contribute to that information. The latest report received just prior to the very recent rain was Soil Temperature 7c , pasture growth rate 9kg dm/ha/day (Kilograms of dry matter per hectare per day),pasture cover 2041 kg/dm/ha (Kilograms of Dry matter per hectare). Rain 10mls ( Millilitres ). BCS 5 ( Body condition score of close to calving dairy cows) The latter is important, helps to prevent acute metabolic issues.
   Guest speaker Carolyn Hooton
  A Sensible Sentencing Trust spokesperson
Presented a clearly understood position and rationale of the Trust modus operandi.
President David presents a gift to Harry Russell. In Recognition of Harry serving to date, 43 Years and continues to serve the aims of Rotary  .He joined Rotary Matamata ,8th July 1975
David Parker introduced Matamata  local, actively involved in Agri Business Carolyn Hooton to members. 'Get out of Jail Free' was the opening remark on the power point presentation. She explained why she joined The Sensible Sentencing Trust, and became a spokesperson for the Trust. Got a bit feisty on criminals getting out of jail , too quick ! Just recently, of 46 convictions, 71% serious violence, 12% drug pushing, 12% home invasion/ burgulary/ theft and 5% multiple driving offences. She is grateful for the Trust to persist in investigation of cold cases, such as Teresa McCormack a 6 years old, murdered and sodomised , to which modern day DNA technology brought about a conviction and closure to her family. Then mentioned Karla Cardno, tortured, raped and brutally murdered. She mentioned the 2007 anti smacking law that became New Zealand Statute law, has not really helped.. Basic society rules being lost of A>B>C>D A= Accountability: B= Boundaries: C= Consequences: D= Discipline. Carolyn acknowledged the work of Garth McVicar. Presented some facts, 60% rise in young offenders, Girls highlighted in serious offending up 30%. Now an acknowledged expedential increase in homicides in New Zealand. Disturbing seven assaults a day on Police, that has been trending  upwards. The Trust has identified convictions that should but did not get a custodial sentence. Legal Aid since 1991 has in their opinion been a huge cost to the  law abiding tax payer. The Clean Bill Act, So after 7 years leaving jail, all conviction history will be wiped "No true representation of a person there". An eye opener subject they have initiated,  Judge the Judges. No one they believe actually correlates their performance  in the Courts. The Trust is appalled for serious harm to babies and pregnant women by  perpetrators, only receiving Home detention. "New Zealand Child abuse rising at rate that is of great concern to the Police, Child Youth and Family Government Agency and Ministry of Health". Name suppression is also of concern to the Trust. "Abolish plea bargaining by Crown Prosecutors".  Thanks to Hon Winston Peters, was able to retain the 'Three Strikes' rule, in the coalition negotiations to form a Government. It is working, Reduction of reoffending down a significant 34%. The Sensible Sentencing Trust is not aligned with any political party. A donation to the Trust would be appreciated, if you decide we are worthy of support. Peter Thissen thanked on behalf of our Club, Carolyn for a thought provoking presentation.

'Who Has Inspired Me'.. Lyn Dobbe.
Apart from my Mother, my Aunty Barbara was not only a role model, but also gave me self belief. Although I could not read musical score, I was encouraged to join her in the harmonious voice choir 'Waikato Rivertones' known also as the 'Sweet Adelines'.  I enjoy music but was no singer! So with the support of Aunty Barbara taking me beyond my comfort zone ,learnt to be  invited to be part of that chorus, just by picking up the tone notes by ear. I had over 6 years of experience with Waikato Rivertones Chorus .Taking me to such places as Nashville and Denver, and obviously the camaraderie that developed. Aunty Barabara died last year, "but she was one hell of an inspiration in my life".
