Evening all. Welcome. Nice card received from District Governor by Elizabeth Bayley-Jull, in thanking our Club for our hospitality and good will; plus the fun element. Good to see our travelling members back from a warm northern hemisphere, who missed a cool southern hemisphere while away. Farm Watch: soil temp a static 9c, cool!. 23kgs/dm/day, pasture cover 2057 kgs/dm/ha, 25mls rain and cow body score 5. Calving well underway. Rotation down to 90 days from a previous 100 day. Days lengthening, good feeling, Daffodils are emerging. Spring is on its way. Farm Watch from UK and Ireland, courtesy of Richard Metcalfe. Some what dire, drought conditions. President David acknowledged that situation, which has notched up off shore sourced animal feeds prices in New Zealand.
Guest Speakers, Julie Morgan-Hughes and Francois Joubert .

Jane Belton Introduced Julie Morgan-Hughes and Francois Joubert, whose topic was 'ShoeBox' gifts of Operation Christmas Child (OCC). Julie supports this organisation locally, where her place of business You Travel Matamata; is a registered drop of and information centre. Francois is responsible for most of the North Island operations for this registered charity. Also an 'Open House International-Director'. Australia and New Zealand work together. Last year they were responsible for servicing six countries. Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Madagascar. This year they will concentrate on four countries. Cambodia, Fiji, Papua New Guinea and Philippines. Operation Christmas Child (OCC) is a project of Samaritan’s Purse. It partners with local churches in developing nations to reach out to children by providing gift-filled shoeboxes . The term shoe box is apt, for gift packages that contain simple gifts. Such as something from each of the 6 categories of: Something to wear, Something to play with, Something for school, Something to love, , Something special and Something for personal hygiene.
Well organised logistics, from regional teams to distribution in 160 countries, is a challenge gladly taken on.11,001,240 'Shoe Boxes' distributed to appropriate children in those 160 countries. 2014 New Zealand made up 25000 'Shoe Box Gifts' and in 2017 30,000, aim is for 34,000 2019. One 'Shoe Box Gift' to one child in there lifetime. Do not use second hand goods, For many, first time for something new.  Francois presented on power point screen, a collage of happy children with their gifts. Some children that are chosen to receive a gift, do not know the concept of a gift, and are helped to open their Shoe Box Gift. People can actually use a shoe box, or get a printed one from Julie to fill it up with those suggested items,  Age groups for both Boys and Girls are 2 to 4, 4 to 9 and 10 to 14 years of age. Once the gift is complete, a donation of $10 per shoebox is essential to cover project costs to deliver, proper labels with a bar code are emailed to you. You gift can be track and traced to where it has gone too.  But important to know,  that children in New Zealand are supported, especially those with mental health issues, and Decile 1 Schools are supported with appropriate gifts. The Shoe Box Gift is part of Samaritan' Purse. A registered Charity in New Zealand CC36649. Worthy of note, in the top 10% of worldwide NGO's ( Non Government Organisations) for being very transparent with their funds.  They also undertake initiatives to  help communities of this world  in need, like clean water provision. Every 17 seconds in the world, a child dies due to dirty water.  Literacy programmes, small family livestock husbandry skills and active against human trafficking  for labour and  the sex industry.Sheryl Ertel thanked our guest speakers , for an informative presentation.

  • President David. Wish to raise a point in District Governor's presentation last week--Change. If any changes are contemplated, then they need to be managed and relevant. 'Who Has Inspired Me'.. Fred Barrett.
Starting his farming career in Hicks Bay, had a very good employer who gave him motivation. Then later carried on into other areas of New Zealand, mainly sheep husbandry. Fred said" Immigrants that were attracted to New Zealand in the 1950,s-1960's and into the 70's, was on the wealth created by the sheep industry. Fred is in awe of the New Zealand Hunterway sheep dog. The Hunterway natural flight of diligent stock work, who would go to the very end of their energy endurance. A most faithful, skilful natural ability New Zealand canine. No problem to move a flock of sheep through an already set stocked pasture area, and not letting them mix together, shear intelligence. Yep, the naturally skilled, faithful and huge work ethos of the New Zealand Huntaway, is so inspiring to me.

  • A Google moment from President David:
Man Flu : The Shocking Truth
Man Flu is a crippling and debilitating disorder indiscriminately striking down male members of the human species without warning. The illness is often referred to pejoratively by female members of the species who are in fact immune from the illness as man flu is now known to exclusively attack the XY chromosome carrier. If Man Flu is kind enough not to kill the infected party it will definitely leave him weak, sick, hurting everywhere and in dire need of TLC.Medical professionals now also widely recognise that self diagnosis by the sufferer is the best means of identification as the symptoms of Man Flu are far more severe than the simple common cold which predominantly targets the XX chromosome holders (i.e. females). This goes some way to explain the cynicism some women display towards their male counterparts.
