Good evening from President Peter, the 3 f's. Fun , friendship and fellowship. "Hope you all had a good weekend, with most of this week forecast for cool frosts and blue skies". Peter insists he is not on a retainer for Refinery Café in Paeroa. But gave a bit of history on its previous building historical importance as an assay office, for smelting gold bullion from North and South Island gold mining. Peter and Chris frequent this café , for its vinyl records , good coffee and food. A small presentation to Barry McKey by President Peter , to recognise and acknowledge Barry's 46th year anniversary as a Rotarian. Prior to Peter formally opening his meeting, a brief farewell prior to Sean and Carol Hogan, District 5050. They fly home tomorrow (Wednesday 30th). Plus an acknowledgement from our District 9930 Governor Leonie Tisch, for all the good work and support of Matamata Rotarians for a very successful District conference , and presented an 'Oscar' to the Club in appreciation of that endeavour. Team Leader for conference, David Hulme received "Lots of congratulatory emails", which is not done that often. He acknowledged his team, who have been on the conference task for three years. David himself, received a standing acclamation for his chairmanship of the organising team.
(L) Lindsay Tisch, Sean & Carol Hogan of District 5050 and David Hulme
Guest Speaker.
The very affable unique thespian and business woman Helen Slattery.
Her main topic was recycling plastics, that started out for rural areas, but now includes urban waste plastic. Helen also briefly explained the role of Agricultural Contractors association, to which she is a national board member of.
Slattery contracting started in Matamata mid 1950's. Roger Slattery bought the business in 1981. All their machines are named. Silage bales became a good farming practice for efficient conserving of surplus grass. Silage wrap kept oxygen out, but when the time came to feed them out; significant waste plastic was the result. Some was buried on farm, and will be there for a very long time before breakdown, and burning in open fires never reaches the critical 1000 degrees C. to double burn the product combustion for a good environmental outcome. So they got involved with PlasBack, to be part of a proper disposal and recycle of plastic waste material network. Plastics are of varied technical make up, so silage bale plastic is different to bale plastic netting, plastic bale twine is different again. So all have to be kept separated for recycling. Helen showed us the plastic after initial process, then that is pelletised. That formulation cannot be reprocessed into silage wrap, so some useful items that can be extruded were shown on the screen, some useful commercial plastic such as Tuff Deck and Tuff Board products that are made. 2009, the whole of New Zealand recycled 9 tonnes of waste plastic. Now that is 1800 tonnes and increasing. They accept for process quite a bit of plastic from farm feed supply firms, furniture and white ware stores as well now. Some commercial firms supplying farm detergents , drenches such as bloat remedies in 20l, 60l ,100 &  200 l plastic drums, do offer a cash back for proper presentation for recycling. Containers that have had machinery oil based products are unable to be recycled.15of 1% of plastic is used on New Land rural  farms, A heck of a lot of different types of plastic utilised by our urban population base of New Zealand. Helen briefly touched on issues affecting her members, as a National board member of the New Zealand Agricultural Association. Many black spots for internet, mobile connectivity in rural areas. Desk top produced Transport Laws are challenged for practical outcomes. Rural Health is a growing concern, so is rural employment. Their industry requires skilled focussed employee's to operate machinery, which has been available from off shore countries. Tougher work permits, for returnee young men and woman with the skills that is now getting harder. With NZ government agencies unable to present people with the skill and dedication and life skills to work with complex agricultural machinery, such as a driving qualification, consistently arrive at work on time and not fail a drug test; to ensure safety for everyone in todays Health and Safety in the workplace obligations on employers. That her association is like other rural lobby groups, are constructively lobbing Government with evidence that skilled rural people are crucial for our economy. That government carte blanche recent immigration and work permit renewal restriction regulations, are in need of a sensible resolution rewrite that benefits New Zealand Inc.  Agricultural contractors do support worthy causes, so you now see Pink silage wrap , that supports Breast Cancer, Yellow silage wrap for Kids Cancer  research and Blue wrap for more science on prostate cancer. Helen's industry is NZQA Credited, and utilise a NZQA Accredited provider for levels 1 to 5 qualification standards. Helen herself is studying for a Degree in Work Place Health and a Major in OSH.... which is Health and Safety in the Work Place, a NZ Statute Law Act of Parliament.
