               Waitangi Day--- No Meeting
As advised last bulletin:
A précis of Michelles Tanner's involvement with the Juang Literacy Centre, Pakistan.
Plus pic's recording her presentation of a Paul Harris Fellowship.
District Governor 9930 presented Michelle Tanner, her Paul Harris Fellowship.
President Peter Vossen , District Governor 9930 Leonie Tisch and Michelle Tanner PHF.
It was 2014 that introduced Michelle to the Pakistan Town of Juang Saddar, that serviced a processing Sugar Mill. That introduction came by being a member of the Immunisation Advisory Team, then actively involved in the 'Worlds Greatest Meal Project' and subsequent fund raising through Facebook. Her passion for Polio eradication had not unnoticed, and was asked to speak on that subject in Lahore. It was when taken to Juang with a local fellow Rotarian peer, saw the filthy state and the woeful lack of teaching aids of Juang School. Although the child students were all from garbage picker families in socio economic challenged circumstance, they were all smartly attired due to local Rotary Club sponsorship. The dedicated teacher, and the school infrastructure needed help, which inspired her to just do that. She left with the promise, to seek Rotary Club support. Not only was Michelle successful in gaining through our Club , as the then new Club President a District Foundation Grant, but attracted support of co-funder Rotary Clubs in the USA  & Pakistan. Eventually four Rotary Clubs and a private benefactor contribution, funded the project development of that school to become the Juang Literacy Centre. So when Fit for purpose construction , computer suite, good toilet facility, teacher support aid and equipment was finished. The formal opening eventuated in local tradition, of which the region language is Urdu, but all children learn and speak English. The opening also included the children presenting the history of this project, with name tags on of who represented which person in that good story.( Michelle can truly say, she had an understudy in Juang!). Part of the ceremony was an plaque unveiling, on which Michelle Tanner is clearly identified., along with other well deserved dedicated people to this project. When Michelle got involved, 75 children of varied age, grouped together, only slates to scribe on, all dirt floor, students 12% literacy rate males, 8% literacy females . October 2017, 175 students. Unfortunately a 200% drop out rate in that time, due to the necessity for children to remain home for domestic duties and/or help sorting through garbage for their respective families to survive. Michelle was accompanied by her daughter Alice at a time when a family member was gravely ill in the UK, and then flew on to the UK to be with Eric and family.
Michelle was witnessed by her family receiving her Paul Harris Fellow. Her parents Terry and Mary Smith proudly stand beside our new Club PHF. Alice Tanner between Mary and Peter, Harriet Tanner between Terry and paterfamilias Eric, with Leonie to his left.

What are you smiling about, Matamata Interact .
Rotary Matamata members were advised , that your book drive not only raised funds which you presented to charitable community organisations. But packaged up in the suitcases of Michelle and Alice Tanner, were a varied choice of the most suitable learning reading material for delivery; as they travelled to the opening of the Juang Literacy Centre.
Good Stuff, you have every right to smile. As we can clearly observe the results of your endeavours. Well done.

  • Peter Thissen reports that things are looking good at concert venue, sown grass areas have been grazed by sheep. Some lake weed due to warm humid weather. Peter and Ineke have been in the dingy , extracting some of that weed. Few more hands  this month, to supplement the help he is already getting from members to do final preparations, so to transform the site into Waikato's premier open air concert venue. Peter will indicate when we need a team at the venue, to complete some required work.
