Evening everyone, welcome to Rotary. First meeting hiccup since I have been in power. Short light hearted debate ensued, as to appropriate terminology of being President.  Our guest speaker unable to be us this evening. So I will present something agricultural later in the meeting , plus Farm Watch. On a sombre note, our thoughts with Fred Barrett, who lost his brother Trevor in a microlight air craft accident. In the Matamata Chronicle, you will see the support for Maori Language Week. Rotary I believe supports Te Reo.  Suggested that members might wish to learn a bit of Te Reo informally, Joanne  Aoake will have coffee mornings at the Café, on the corner of Tainui street and Broadway.

  • Murray Wills. Organisers of Daffodil Day collection around town, thanks Rotary Matamata members support last Friday. Those combined efforts raised $11,000 , yep $11k in Matamata.
  • Special mention, Gordon and Audrey Lukies thanked the Club for the lovely flowers to celebrate their 64th wedding anniversary. Gordon also a member of Rotary for 63 of those years.
  • David Hulme had a shunt sheet go round this meeting. For members who are available as collectors for Red Nose day Friday 28th September and /or can provide cup cakes for this worthy street appeal. Some businesses will be contacted prior, to see if we can gauge how many cup cakes we will require. David m 021 328746
  • Blood Pressure Checks in  October. Murray Wills will require member support. More info later as to date and where. A great community health initiative.
  • President David asks you to support a good attendance of members and guests, for next weeks special guest speaker. Liz Coutts  ONZM is a known capable leader in Governance. A Matamata girl, and a Rotary  Matamata exchange student of 1976. Possibly we as a club helped her on her successful career path. So please confirm and advise of your guests that will attend our Womans Sufferage  125th Anniversary acknowledgment meeting, next week; on the answer phoneKevin Kent has to advise Rob of numbers for catering purposes, and obviously table set ups.
  • Saturday October 6th. A & P show. Car parking. Will need enough members to share the time required on the day. Went well last year , as a Club fund raiser.
  • Through Maz McIvor. Daniella Navarrete says "Hola" . from Chile. Nearing the end of her school days, wishes to be remembered. Fond memories of her time with us. Lots of school work.
  • President David, presented some power point information on Manuka Farms in Chile. Explained the rationale for that development of a reasonable size dairy farming operation, located on the same latitude as New Zealand. Using New Zealand knowledge , skills and other NZ Intellectual property to advance the New Zealand cost effective management of milking cows to the grass growth curve; rather than the all year round calving and milking. David is "cool to be part of that dairy business for the past 13 years".  The world still has a deficit of milk availability, even though world production has on average been increasing every year. Only 10.4% of dairy products are traded on the world, as most milk is taken up by local consumption in producing countries. Only 7% of world milk production is from low cost grass input dairy farming. 93% of milk is produced from feedlot indoor factory farming operations. A big turnaround is now the fat content ibeing the most valuable component to a producer, protein has declined in value. New Zealand Dairy industry produces only 3% of the world annual milk products, as compared to the Economic Union which produces 24% Fonterra Co Operative is #3 processor exporter in the world, based  on financial turnover. FARM WATCH: Spring sunshine is here. 50mls rain past seven days. Soil temp 12c, whereas same time last year was 13c. Grass growth 48kgs/dm/day/ha (last year same time 53 kgs) 93.5% cows calved. Milking herd producing a very creditable 2.2kgs milk solids per day. As with all professional stockmen, there is always an affinity with animals. So sometimes when a herd matriarch favourite dies of milkfever at 13 years of age,  it is felt as a sad moment.

'Who Has Inspired Me'.. Leonie Tisch.
A heck of a lot of people have inspired me, in the course of my life. To be honest, Rotary has inspired me on how I feel in life. I like to recite a wonderful poem Beauty Tips by Audrey Hepburn, that encapsulates those feelings.
  • For attractive lips. speak words of kindness
  • For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people.
  • For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry.
  • For beautiful hair, let a child run his/her fingers through it once a day.
  • For poise, walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone.
  • People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed and redeemed; never throw out anyone.
  • Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, you will find one at the end of each of your arms.
  • As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands; one for yourself, and one for helping others.
Dani Navarrette turns 18, October 14th.

President David, presented a relatively unknown bit of WW2 heroism by Audrey Hepburn.
As Edda van Heemstra. Took messages through occupied Netherlands, secreted in her bicycle.

It was long believed that she participated in the Dutch resistance itself. A Brave woman.
