Evening all. Welcome and good to see everyone. Special welcome to guest speaker Caron Stewart, who always promotes the positive and the nice things many people do; to ensure Matamata is the best district to live in and to be so community involved. Crusaders Super Rugby champs, but missing our South African Rotarian for comment! Farm Watch: soil temp tracking upwards 12.7c, pasture growth 23 up to 27kgs/dm/ha/day. pasture cover declined to 1900 kg/dm/ha due to 60% calved and the need to offer controlled appropriate feed levels from pasture with 4kgs of feed supplement . 70-74 day rotation. $NZ $US exchange rate helping export dairy product returns to dairy farmer's and New Zealand Inc. No great concern if managing tight feed availability. Spring is starting to show itself, as we head towards middle of September when things pasture wise really start move; so having little residual pasture right now after grazing, will help on going quality nutritious pasture when grass growth really gets into gear. The supplementary feed also helps with magnesium and calcium uptake for metabolic reasons.
Guest speaker Caron Stewart (C) with a former 'journo David Hulme and Club End polio Now Champion, Michelle Tanner.
Caron Stewart introduced to our meeting by David Hulme, he highlighted the contribution to our community with her bi-weekly publication "Scene". Caron although a former Te Aroha  person has made Matamata her home for 34 years. Solo mum , raised a family of three boys. Self confessed independent stubborn person, left home and  lived, in accommodation that was quite a bit short of James Cook Hotel standard; before her schooling had finished.  One thing led to another with recommendation of her ability in graphic and cartoon art , to be an advertisement salesperson for the Matamata Chronicle. Staff  included great supportive people in Sandra Hunter and Gaye Belton. That interface with commercial clients of that publication, highlighted some concerns that she felt needed to addressed. She was unsuccessful to encourage her employer to address those concerns. That, plus her knowledge of what business houses feed back on what they thought was  missing from the only local news paper with their respective business  promotional investment. Caron's  tenacity, but little knowledge and experience in newspaper publication, but found mentors in Sandra Hunter and Gaye Belton, Self belief persuaded her to publish her own newspaper, that she heartfelt believed was achievable. Caron undertook some required costing's, that became quite significant. She backed herself, sold her home for the capital to actually develop a publication , and with some commercial and advisory support from Mathew Horton,  his Company published the NZ Herald and also printed and still does her Scene publication. Her passion was to advocate for being positive in our town and district. NOT the bad things, negative themes that seem to be everywhere you turn .The Scene was not about herself, but her Matamata community, which did give her the inspiration to pursue her publication development. Not a natural journalistic writer , or  a savvy reporter from the outset; but  learnt  that skill. With some funny instances  along the way. such as covering political party local public meetings that had unique Caron Stewart interfaces with Don Brash and John Key!!! Her feed back last thirteen years to her Scene bi weekly publication, of which the identifying feature that came about by lack of something to print... a full photograph front page has been personally rewarding and "great for me". Her editorial direction is being positive, show  happiness and appealing to readers and commercial clients investment in advertisement, Plus the quirky little snippets in the classifieds. Ross Bay, including a humorous fraudulent slip thanked Caron for her endeavours, and we appreciate the editorials that highlight the good things local organisations in our  community are achieving, for positive outcomes that support Matamata and district to be a great place to live and work..

  • President David highlighted a recantation from Club change over, on the topic of :Benevolent dictatorship.
A benevolent dictatorship refers to a government in which an authoritarian leader exercises absolute political power over the state but is perceived to do so with regard for benefit of the population as a whole, standing in contrast to the decidedly non-benevolent stereotype of a dictator. A benevolent dictator may allow for some economic liberalisation or democratic decision-making to exist, such as through public referenda or elected representatives with limited power, and often makes preparations for a transition to genuine democracy during or after their term. It might be seen as a republican form of enlightened despotism. The label has been applied to leaders such as Mustafa Kemal Atatürk of Turkey,[1] Josip Broz Tito of Yugoslavia,[2] Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore,[3] France-Albert René of Seychelles .

Club meeting 17th October 2017,  Glenys Parton with Vinna ( then was 7) and Mum Korina. Vinna  was then on the slow road to recovery with medical intervention, and intense  orthopaedic exercises. Our Club Champion for ROMAC, Maz McIvor  report to our meeting  touched on her disability that ROMAC brought her to New Zealand, Maz indicated great progress with Vinna, and will be back home to Vanuatu before too long.
Club duty calls,  our intrepid bar stewards Garry Moore (L) and David Wheadon  somewhat in deep concentration to support pre meeting fellowship.
Now, has anybody got a good caption that may encapsulate their thoughts; caught on camera????

'Who Has Inspired Me'.. Leo Kingston.
Although I get inspiration from my fellow Rotarians and other positive people I associate with everyday. But it is my Mum and Dad that really inspired me by being great role models, as they nurtured 13 children including myself. Warm and well clothed , a secure home environment with food on the table. Dad worked hard as a painter and decorator to achieve that. I learn't good work ethics  while working with him. "If you can't do a job well, don't do the job at all" was his mantra. Dad regretted leaving school too early, due to the responsibility of having to be the bread winner for his mother and siblings in the WW2 era. He did not wish his children to have a truncated education regime. Yes , My Dad and Mum were loving parents that inspired me for my life's journey.
Foot note from Leo:  My Dad did not inspire me to have 13 children though !!!!!
