Good evening David Wheadon as Peter welcomed everyone to Rotary tonight, evening of
fun and happiness; that's what is Rotary. President Peter said his intro theme tonight is success. Well what a great night last week, great event. Thanks to all concerned, "Topical and relevant for small rural servicing towns like ours". Peter is nearly through Doug Avery's book, The Resilient Farmer, a success story "Positive read". Success, new Charter Club; Rotary Rototuna-Hamilton had their first meeting last week.

Guest speaker Brian Hare, spoke on building aeroplanes. Sixty years in the aviation industry. RNZAF 1960 to 68. Then got involved with the civil aviation industry.
Early 1970's Started AeroMotive based at Hamilton airport, mainly overhauling and rebuilding normal aspirated aircraft engines.
Then created Pacific Aerospace.
Brian introduced to the meeting by Rexine Hawes. He acknowledged New Zealand aviation
plays a big part in our countrys' economics. Yes, you see reports of Air New Zealand ticket sales, but the New Zealand aviation servicing industry creates $1 billion + of value for NZ annually. Kiwi aviation ingenuity evident from Richard Pearce 1903 flight effort. Built his two cylinder engine from motor bike parts, flaps was part of his design, so was the variable pitch propeller... Brian showed times lines of significant aviation milestones in New Zealand. From Agricultural top dressing planes on going developments to this very day, that from Tiger Moths that had immediate impact on land productivity, through to the present turbine powered fit for purpose top dressing aircraft. The Ag aircraft fleet has historically dramatically reduced , due to the new efficiencies of these aircraft. His company has a long association with the Fletcher ag aircraft design. He showed New Zealand bought the very Boeing aircraft that company made. The formation of TEAL that morphed into Air New Zealand, Pan AM first commercial passenger flights and other events that we see today in air travel to and from and within NZ. He id very proud when owner of Pacific Aerospace Corporation. Not only building the AirTrainer CT/4 E pilot training aircraft, but the successful development of the PAC 750XL . A process that required 298 standards to be met for certification. His company was also involved with Hovercraft for Military use. built target drone aircraft under licence, manufactured all Kruiger front wing slat flaps for all variants of the 747. Fighter aircraft FA18 flight control parts, Fin/Rudder parts for Airbus 320/330/340 series. Another marine involvement for his company was also involved in the Anzac frigate project, producing combat system containers for the warships. Also produces support spare parts for the Australian built Nomad aircraft. Commercial aviation is growing at a fast rate world wide. 15000 commercial passenger aircraft will be built in the next three decades and only 5000 of those are replacements, estimated requiring 256000 pilots, let alone the engineering support that will be required. Right now, the US civil commercial aviation needs 75 qualified new pilots A DAY. The worlds most significant airport baggage handling systems provider company, is based in Auckland. Brian was thanked on behalf of our Club by Alice Clothier.
The writer remembers two Carvairs parked at PAC side of Hamilton airfield, many years ago. One or even both ended up in Honolulu to deliver bread.

What are you smiling about, Robert Stuart.
We left UK to NZ on ANZAC day 1995,now have three grandchildren who we look forward to staying with us. They like my porridge, they realise I check their bedrooms for being tidy, and announce whose room is a bird nest. Last time they were with us, 4 year old Archie pushed pass me in our hall way " Get out of my way old man"! That still makes me smile , and cannot wait till they arrive.
Anzac Day now promotes a sense of unity, perhaps more effectively than any other day on the national calendar. People whose politics, beliefs and aspirations are widely different can nevertheless share a genuine sorrow at the loss of so many lives in war.
It was great to hear from Rob Donderwinkel few weeks ago, that Matamata Scouts promote respect for our flag.
District Conference early bird registration offer, has now expired. Members who have not registered, who now find their circumstance position changed and could consider to attend. .www.9930conference.orgfor online registration.

Matamata Festival of Brass, Sunday 20th May 2018
Volunteers required to help as we always do every year, for supporting Matamata Brass present Matamata Festival of Music. This year, the Festival clashes with District Conference. Of which, two thirds of our Club members are attending.
David Wheadon is our Club champion to organise a team, to help with logistics during the performances. So only a small pool of Club members are in a position of making themselves available, for either the morning or afternoon or even all day; that has to be seriously considered please.
Our Club calendar for May, looks busy for its members. So there will not be a Club Tuesday night designated to attend that show as a Club activity, which the Matamata Musical Theatre has advised us of.
If there is a consensus of members who would like to attend this show as a group, on a different date. Feel welcome to do so.
" Why did they choose to have District Assembly on Duck shooting opening day! The sacrifices I make!".
Parting Thought
Tragedy of War. Poem by British Poet, A E Houseman 1859-1936.
'Here dead we lie because we did not choose to live and shame the land from which we sprung. Life ,to be sure, is nothing much to lose. But young men think it is, and we were young'.
