Peter welcomed members, guests, visitors for fun and fellowship that is our Rotary Club. As a meeting sweetener, recounted his VIP tour of Chelsea sugar refinery, Auckland last weekend. His daughters' partner Matthew is a project engineer at the refinery. A new $7 million visitor centre is to shortly open. Peter saw the process from raw sugar to the 3kg familiar bags we purchase. The refinery has been the main supplier of sugar to New Zealanders since 1884. Most raw product comes from Singapore, and secondly Australia. Peter left the refinery" With the sweet taste of a successful company".
Peter got to some privileged access points, at Chelsea refinery. Sky Tower can be seen in the background..
Suggests that  a club visit would be very   informative and interesting, as there is soon to be opened a $7million visitor centre.
Teresa Stanley , our guest speaker.
Guest speaker Teresa Stanley, Research & Development: DrowningPrevention-Auckland. DrowningPrevention-Auckland has access to rate payer funding for its safety work and is a  member of Water Safety New Zealand. Teresa currently studying for a PhD of drowning in Auckland waters. Where there is a significant blend of cultural ethnicity; that harvest and partake in recreation pursuits in open waters. Teresa is proud that the education presented in Auckland by her organisation, has resulted in the lowest rate per capita of drowning's.
Her PhD study findings, was presented to our meeting. "What is swimming" was a question to us. Indicated to us statistics that showed a big gulf between Perception and Reality of people in their ability to 'swim' in open water as compared to indoor swimming pools. In her quest to formulate a 'Drowning Prevention Model'. She sought community participation in a real time study, that consisted of written and practical exposure to open water at Bethels Beach, West Auckland. Gender information results showed males were more perceptive as to their open water 'swimming' abilities than was in reality. Nearly the same equation when male and female parents were asked of their children's open water capabilities. There were some eye opening comparative stats  between European, Pasifica and Maori adults as regards to life jacket use. Based on that evidence, a multi cultural education team is now in place, which has seen positive results in the wearing of fit for purpose lifejackets and an uptake of water safety advice. There is a further six teams that visits schools and the like that present quality education on water safety for  enclosed pools and open water with the intention of promoting 'Water skills for Life'. So 'swimming' is not just making progress through water, it is the skill set required to stay safe and alive. So 'Drowning' is a significant multifaceted phenomenon, on how good we think we are. DrowningPrevention-Auckland promotes competences to cope with risks in open waters.

Please advise Bulletin editor Stew, for club duty matrix.
If you know you will be absent from club meetings from now till end of July. Please give me the 'heads up' as early as possible, which will help me plan club nights duty roster. For instance, Margaret and I are unavailable for all this June normal Rotary Tuesday meetings.
Image result for cartoon thanksStew has had several advanced notices of unavailability dates.
Makes the job so much easier, to work out a club night duty roster to the end of this Rotary term. Just three months to change over, time has simply flown by for me!!!
